Google is building infrastructure for an audience that never actually sees your homepage.

Google quietly shipped documentation for a new crawler last week. Not Googlebot. Not the ads crawler. A separate user agent called Google-Agent, designed specifically for AI agents that perform tasks on behalf of users. The documentation describes it as something used to "navigate the web and perform actions upon user request," citing Project Mariner as the reference product.

On paper, that sounds like an incremental infrastructure update. Another bot in the logs. But I think this is one of those moments that looks small in the changelog and significant eighteen months from now, because Google isn't building a crawler for a product that browses. They're building a crawler for a product that does things.

And that distinction changes what your website needs to be good at.

The shift from "show me" to "do this for me"

The premise of SEO for twenty-something years has been: a human types a query, sees a list of results, clicks one. Your job is to be the one they click. Everything we optimize for, from title tags to page speed to featured snippets, assumes a human is making the decision at the other end.

Google-Agent doesn't work that way. It's the infrastructure for AI agents that execute tasks autonomously. A user says "find me the cheapest flight to Lisbon next Tuesday" or "compare these three CRM tools and sign me up for the free trial of the best one." The agent goes and does it. No SERP. No click. No human scanning your meta description to decide if you're worth their time.

From what I've seen on one ecommerce site I consult for (~$4M annual revenue, heavy organic dependency), roughly 8% of their server logs in Q1 2026 already showed non-standard bot traffic that didn't match any known crawler signature. We couldn't attribute it cleanly, but the pattern looked a lot like automated browsing: hitting product pages, checking prices, leaving. No engagement metrics, no scroll depth, no time on page. Just data extraction. That number was closer to 2% a year ago.

I'm not claiming that's all AI agents. Some of it is probably scraping. But the trajectory is clear, and Google building dedicated infrastructure for agent-based crawling suggests they see that trajectory too.

Why this connects to the OpenClaw problem

There's a broader context here that makes Google-Agent feel less like an experiment and more like a defensive move. OpenClaw is an emerging category of personal AI agents that orchestrate tasks across multiple AI providers. Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, cheaper Chinese alternatives. The user doesn't care which model handles which subtask. They care that the job gets done.

OpenAI hired OpenClaw's developer, Peter Steinberger. Anthropic already has Claude Cowork, a desktop interface that lets non-technical users run AI agents for real workflows. Google, despite having Gemini CLI, doesn't have a direct competitor to that kind of consumer-facing agent product. They're reportedly shifting staff from Project Mariner to a broader Gemini Agent initiative, which reads to me like an internal admission that the browser-assistant approach wasn't ambitious enough.

The industry term floating around is Large Action Models. LAMs. As opposed to the Large Language Models we've been talking about for three years. The distinction matters: an LLM generates text, an LAM performs actions. Books a hotel room. Fills out a form. Compares prices across six tabs and picks one. Google seems to be racing to build the infrastructure layer that makes their version of this work at scale, and Google-Agent is part of that plumbing.

Anyway, the competitive dynamics are interesting but slightly beside the point for anyone reading this who manages a website. The part that matters is simpler and more uncomfortable.

Your site has a new audience, and it doesn't have eyes

If you're an SEO practitioner or you manage a site that depends on organic traffic, here's the uncomfortable reality: you're about to be optimizing for two completely different consumers of your content. Humans and agents. And they care about very different things.

A human cares about your headline, your page layout, your trust signals, your brand. An agent cares about whether it can extract structured information quickly, whether your site functions without JavaScript rendering, whether your checkout flow can be navigated programmatically, and whether your structured data is accurate and complete.

I think most marketing teams aren't remotely ready for this, and honestly, I'm not sure what "ready" even looks like yet. But there are some things that seem obvious enough to start on.

Structured data becomes load-bearing infrastructure, not an SEO nice-to-have. If an agent is comparing your product to a competitor's product, it's going to rely on schema markup for price, availability, reviews, specifications. If that data is wrong, incomplete, or missing, the agent picks the competitor. No second chances. No "well, the human will scroll down and find the price eventually." The agent moves on.

JavaScript-heavy sites have a new problem. Most AI agents are going to struggle with single-page applications and heavy client-side rendering the same way Googlebot struggled with them five years ago. Except agents won't wait for you to fix it. They'll just skip you. Server-side rendering and clean HTML aren't just technical SEO hygiene anymore. They're access requirements for an entirely new channel.

API accessibility starts to matter for visibility. This one feels early, but the direction seems clear. If agents are performing actions, sites that expose APIs or structured endpoints for common tasks (pricing, booking, comparison) will get chosen by agents over sites that require a full browser session to accomplish the same thing. It's the same logic as why Google favored mobile-friendly sites once mobile traffic crossed 50%. The platform follows the user, and the user is increasingly an agent.

The measurement gap nobody's talking about

Here's what genuinely worries me. If an AI agent visits your site, extracts the information it needs, and completes a task for the user without that user ever seeing your brand, how do you measure that? Your analytics won't register a meaningful session. Your attribution model has no idea it happened. You made the sale, or you influenced the decision, or you lost the comparison, and you have no visibility into any of it.

This is the same attribution blindness problem that's already plaguing paid media, except now it hits organic too. We're potentially heading toward a world where a significant chunk of your site's value is being consumed by intermediaries that don't show up in GA4.

I don't have a clean answer for this. Nobody does yet. But if your reporting is entirely session-based, you're going to have an increasingly incomplete picture of how your site actually performs. Server log analysis, which most marketing teams abandoned years ago in favor of tag-based analytics, might become relevant again. That's a slightly ironic full-circle moment.

Three things worth doing this quarter

I'd start with structured data audits. Not the cursory "do we have schema" check. A real audit: is every product page, every service page, every piece of content marked up with accurate, complete structured data? Google's Rich Results Test is the minimum. Go further. Check that prices update dynamically, that availability is real-time, that review markup reflects actual reviews. An agent trusting your structured data with a purchase decision raises the stakes considerably.

Second, check your JavaScript dependency. Load your key pages with JavaScript disabled. If the core content, pricing, and calls to action disappear, you have work to do. This was good advice two years ago for technical SEO. Now it's becoming good advice for an entirely different reason.

Third, start monitoring your server logs for non-standard bot traffic. Look for user agents you don't recognize, access patterns that look like automated task completion rather than human browsing. You probably won't be able to identify Google-Agent specifically yet, since it's early. But building the habit of monitoring this now means you'll notice the inflection point when it arrives instead of six months after.

None of this is urgent in the "drop everything" sense. Google-Agent is new. Agentic traffic is still a small fraction of total web traffic. But the infrastructure is being built right now, by the biggest company in search, and the pattern of these things is that they grow slowly and then very quickly. I'd rather have my structured data clean and my rendering sorted before it matters than after.

The uncomfortable part is the identity question

There's a deeper tension here that I keep turning over. For years, SEO has been about making your site appealing to humans via the intermediary of a search engine. Google was the gatekeeper, but the end consumer was always a person. If agents become a significant traffic source, and they perform tasks without the user ever visiting your site directly, then your site's role shifts. It becomes less of a destination and more of a data source. Less of a storefront and more of an API endpoint that happens to also have a storefront attached.

That's a strange thing to plan for. And to be fair, we're probably years away from agents handling a majority of web tasks. But Google doesn't build dedicated crawler infrastructure for hypotheticals. They build it when they see enough internal data to justify the engineering investment. The fact that Google-Agent exists at all is, I think, the most interesting signal in SEO this quarter. More interesting than any algorithm update.

Most of the SEO industry is still optimizing for a world where a human reads ten blue links and picks one. That world isn't disappearing tomorrow. But the next world is being built alongside it right now, and the sites that are legible to both humans and agents are probably going to have an advantage that compounds quietly over the next couple of years.

I don't think the answer is to panic or to rebuild anything. It's more like... start paying attention to a part of your site you've been ignoring, and understand that the audience for your technical infrastructure just got a lot bigger than Googlebot.
