Google's Data Manager API Consolidated Three Pipelines Into One Dependency
Google's official pitch for the Data Manager API: “one centralized, secure connection so advertisers can easily get the most out of Google AI for their campaigns.” That sentence contains three value propositions and exactly zero mentions of what it replaces or why the old thing had to die.
What it replaces is three separate data pipelines. Customer Match uploads through the Google Ads API. Offline conversion imports through a different endpoint. DV360 audience ingestion through yet another. If you've been managing all three, you've probably spent more engineering hours maintaining that plumbing than you'd like to admit. One advertiser told PPC Land they were spending $1 million per year on maintenance alone across the fragmented legacy system.
The Data Manager API went generally available in December 2025, rolling all of that into a single REST/gRPC endpoint. Conversion data, customer match lists, mobile device IDs, store sales, PAIR identifiers. One API surface, one authentication flow (OAuth 2.0 with a dedicated datamanager scope), one set of rate limits.
The consolidation is real. The simplification is real. And the dependency it creates is also real.
The April 1 Deadline Already Happened
If your Customer Match uploads stopped working this week, here's why. As of April 1, 2026, Google disabled Customer Match uploads through the Google Ads API entirely. The OfflineUserDataJobService and UserDataService endpoints for Customer Match are done. If your developer token hadn't been used for Customer Match uploads in the 180 days before April 1, it lost that capability permanently on the Google Ads API side.
The fix is migration to the Data Manager API. Non-Customer Match operations like campaigns, bidding, and reporting continue working fine through the Google Ads API. This is specifically about audience data uploads.
If you're still running, it's because your token was active recently enough to avoid the cutoff. But that reprieve is temporary. The full legacy API sunset for DV360 audience ingestion and data partner integrations lands in March 2027. Everyone migrates eventually. The only question is whether you do it on your timeline or Google's.
What the New API Actually Looks Like Under the Hood
I'll be honest, the technical spec is genuinely better than what it replaces. Batch capacity hits 10,000 audience members per request with up to 10 user identifiers per member. Rate limits sit at 100,000 requests per day and 300 per minute per Google Cloud project. That's workable for most mid-market advertisers and reasonable for enterprise accounts running multiple audience refreshes daily.
The security layer is where Google is making the sharpest pitch. Confidential matching operates in a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), meaning your hashed customer data gets processed in isolated hardware where even Google's own engineers can't access the raw inputs. Encryption uses XChaCha20-Poly1305 with dual-cloud key management across GCP and AWS. Product manager Melissa Ng framed it simply: “Privacy should be table stakes.”
Treasure Data, one of the launch integration partners, reported an 80% reduction in engineering effort and 2x faster advertiser onboarding after migrating. That tracks with what I'd expect from consolidating three separate integration maintenance burdens into one.
Google launched with eleven integration partners including Adswerve, Hightouch, Tealium, Treasure Data, and Zapier. If you're using a CDP or data platform that already has a connector, the migration is probably a week of engineering time. If you built custom pipelines directly against the Google Ads API, budget more like a month.
The Part That Should Make You Uncomfortable
Here's where my enthusiasm gets complicated.
Think of it like moving from three separate bank accounts at three different banks to one checking account at a single institution. The monthly statements get simpler. The counterparty risk goes up.
Three separate pipelines were annoying. They were also three independent integration points. If Google changed the terms on one, you had two others running while you figured it out. If the Customer Match API went down, your conversion imports were unaffected. If DV360 had issues, your Google Ads audience refreshes kept humming.
One API is one dependency. One rate limit ceiling. One authentication scope. One set of terms of service. One potential failure point for every piece of first-party data you send to Google.
Search Engine World called the Data Manager API “mostly a programmatic wrapper around features that already existed” and flagged the strategic concern directly: “locking yourself deeper into Google's walled garden while handing them even richer signals.”
Google's own stat claiming marketers with “deeply integrated AI tools report 60% greater revenue growth” came from their blog announcement. The methodology behind that number remains unspecified. Self-reported results from advertisers who are already the most invested in the platform. I'd treat it as directional, not evidence.
Every forced migration in Google Ads over the past five years follows the same arc: make the new thing better, make the old thing harder, make the old thing impossible.
The pattern is familiar. PMax consolidated campaign types into one black box (and Google spent three years telling everyone to trust it before recently handing some controls back). Smart Bidding consolidated bid strategies. Now the Data Manager API consolidates data ingestion. More of your data, flowing through fewer pipes, with less visibility into what happens between input and output. We saw a version of this recently when Google Ads users discovered their additional conversion signals were being optimized for the easiest conversions, not the most valuable ones.
If You Haven't Migrated Yet, Start Here
Audit your developer tokens. Check which ones have been used for Customer Match uploads in the last 180 days. Any that haven't are already locked out as of April 1. You can verify by attempting a Customer Match upload through the Google Ads API. If it fails with an authorization error, you need the Data Manager API.
Map your data flows. List every pipeline pushing data into Google: Customer Match lists, offline conversions, enhanced conversions for leads, store sales, DV360 audiences. Each one needs a migration path to the Data Manager API before March 2027.
Check your integration partners. If you're running Hightouch, Tealium, or one of the other eleven launch partners, they may have already built the connector. Ask your account rep. This could save you the custom migration entirely.
Test with validate_only. The Data Manager API supports a validate_only parameter during implementation. Use it. Run test audience uploads and conversion events in parallel with your existing pipeline before cutting over.
Watch the diagnostics dashboard. The Data Manager UI inside Google Ads (under Tools) shows daily stats, connection health, and diagnostic data. Conversion data typically takes 3 to 6 hours for complete attribution processing, though some events surface within 15 to 30 minutes. If you can run a full audience refresh and see the data reflected within 6 hours, your migration is working.
March 2027 Is the Deadline That Touches Everyone
April 1 was about Customer Match. March 2027 is when legacy DV360 audience ingestion and data partner integrations go dark entirely. That deadline touches everyone running any kind of direct Google data integration, not just the teams uploading Customer Match lists through the old API.
Eleven months sounds comfortable until you factor in holiday code freezes, Q4 priority conflicts, and the reality that migration projects get deprioritized roughly every time there's a fire to put out somewhere else.
From what I've seen across forced API migrations like this, roughly 40% of teams start their migration work in the final quarter before the deadline. That's also when the support documentation gets tested hardest and the edge cases pile up fastest.
I'd start the scoping work now. Even if the actual migration doesn't begin until Q3, knowing the size of the project means you can slot it into a sprint when capacity opens up. Waiting until January 2027 to discover you have six custom pipelines to rebuild is the kind of surprise nobody wants mid-quarter.
Google's stated goal is “full use-case parity” for the Data Manager API sometime in 2026, meaning it should handle everything the legacy endpoints could before the final sunset. Whether that timeline holds is an open question. The deprecation date rarely moves. The feature parity date sometimes does.
